I talk a lot to the Lord and try to allow His Holy Spirit / The Holy Spirit to guide me.  I get in the way of the process sometimes, but frequently ask God to correct my off-thinking or to make the path that He wants me to take clear.

Are you a researcher like I am?  When I want to know something, I want to know then, so I am constantly listening to podcasts and reading blogs and books, especially those about running a business.  Frequently, I have to stop and ask, “Father God, what do you think about this point?  Is this true?”  Hence the filter.

This is true with every idea that crosses the tables of our mind. What ideas do we let stay and chew on and what ideas to we dismiss?  There are so many ideas in the business world especially, that can trip up a Christian business person if they are not properly filtered.  So how do we do this?

1. Filter by the Bible

stealingSome filters are clear, so clear that they are considered to be ethical issues rather than moral.  Even secular sources recognize that it is wrong to embezzle money from one’s company or rob clients: (Exodus 20:15 “You shall not steal.”) or to not work hard for an employer who is paying you for your time: (Proverbs 18:9One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys.“)

Checking an idea or a principle with the Bible is an excellent place to start.  We can read the Word and see principles in the Bible that may inform on the principle that we are comparing.  If the Bible directly contradicts the principle, then we need to toss it.

2. Filter by the Holy Spirit

If you are looking at a concept that seems to fall in a grey area, this is where The Holy Spirit is here to guide you.  You may have read some of my other articles and been encouraged to consistently ask the Holy Spirit.  That’s not my cop-out, lol.  I recognize that not everyone’s situation may exactly line up with one that I am discussing and only the Holy Spirit can help you take good advice and apply it correctly to your situation… Him knowing your future and all ;D

The Holy Spirit will also help you to “test the spirits” of what you are being taught.  Oooo spooky!  What does that mean?!  Simply this: The Holy Spirit will help you to discern who is actually being glorified by what idea- the enemy or the one true God.  This is what’s going on behind the scenes of an idea or concept that may just sound good on the surface.  As my mom would say, “You eat the meat and throw away the bones”.

Genie-of-the-lampWhen I first started learning everything I could to run a business, I started following some videos of well known entrepreneurs and solopreneurs on basic business concepts.  As I got deeper into my education, it became clear that there is a lot of self-reliance being taught in the business community.  Ever hear anyone encourage you to unleash power from within yourself to overcome obstacles and be the best you?  Do you hear this idea in the Christian business community at times too?

Well, let’s take that concept to the Word of God and ask “what power can we release from inside of ourselves?” 2 Peter 1:3 talks about the divine power of God.  Acts 1:8 talks about receiving power from God by way of the Holy Spirit.  Does power originate in us or from God?

Jude 1:18b-19: “‘…In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.’These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.”

This seems like an important fundamental topic.  I could give you a million helpful hints about how to improve your businesses and brands, but what are they worth if the Lord takes you in a different direction?

Now, I want to hear from you.  Leave me a comment and tell me when following the Holy Spirit helped you in business!  God bless ~
